Why should I invest in an irrigation system?

First and foremost, irrigation systems designed by North Arrow protect your plant material investment.

In addition to preserving your plants and soil, our systems will prevent wasted water and save you hundreds of dollars annually with smart scheduling, thoughtful design, and a reduced chance of breaks and leaks.

When is the best time to install a new irrigation system?

The ideal time to install an irrigation system is during new construction, before you break ground. In this case, it is best to think of the irrigation before concrete is poured or paving stones are installed. This will give you an opportunity to run sleeving material under any hard services, which can save on costs of manual labour when it comes time to put in your irrigation.

Of course, not everyone has the opportunity to start fresh! North Arrow installs new irrigation systems on mature sites all the time, and we're here to help on any landscape.

Our Systems At A Glance

Every irrigation system we install is custom-built to best suit the needs of the landscape. However, our designs also feature some common qualities.

Large variety

We install drip irrigation, overhead sprays and rotors, and micro-irrigation for gardens, lawns, hanging baskets, pots, and greenhouses.

Uniform watering

Our irrigation systems are designed to be mightily efficient, with the highest water distribution uniformity possible.

Precise watering

You can trust that our systems will deliver the exact amount of water that your plants require, precisely where they need it.

Easy upkeep

Our systems and installation methods consider easy maintenance as a key design element, and also keep future changes to the landscape in mind.

Future-proof design

Your garden is an ever-evolving ecosystem, and our systems are designed to be easily expanded and modified as your landscape matures and changes.

Smart Watering

As the severity and duration of our summer droughts increases, it is even more critical that we irrigate with care.

How do you efficiently water different zones?

Without the right calibration, one plant community may get enough water while the other receives too much or not enough. Most likely neither plant community is getting the precise amount of water they need. Either condition results in plant stress, which increases the likelihood of pests and diseases troubling your landscape.

That's why our irrigation systems are designed to water specific plant communities in specific conditions.

For example, we will always keep gardens and lawns on separate irrigation zones, and never water sunny and shady locations together.

How can I take a conscious approach to irrigation?

Despite the luxury of having an irrigation system, we still encourage our clients to train their gardens to be less dependent on supplemental water.

We have a firm belief that an ecologically-friendly garden should require watering no more than once per week during the hottest times of the summer. Depending on the plants, even established gardens can be trained to be less water dependent.

SMART FROM THE START: One of our primary goals as landscape designers is to build landscapes that will require very little water within three years of planting.

This conscious irrigation methodology not only lowers your watering costs, but also helps keep our city’s drinking water in the reservoir.

Optimizing Existing Systems

North Arrow Landscapes can help you optimize your existing irrigation system, identify and repair any problems, and provide professional scheduling services.

Assessment & Troubleshooting

Irrigation systems can vary wildly from install to install, and it's common for our clients to have inherited a system that didn't include a plan. This can make it difficult to locate and fix issues in your gardens.

Fortunately, our trained and experienced staff are experts at troubleshooting residential and commercial irrigation systems.

We'll make a full assessment of your system, identify problems, and come up with solutions. This process includes:

  • Running through your entire system zone by zone
  • Checking over your irrigation controller and other hardware
  • Providing an objective evaluation on the performance and quality of your system

We will provide you with a detailed report on our findings and recommendations, including a cost estimate to help with budget planning. We can also advise you on our suggested priorities for a phased-in approach to upgrades and repairs.

Irrigation Scheduling

Irrigation scheduling is designed to provide optimal watering to your landscapes. This will help you save money, save water, and protect the health of your plants.

SERIOUS ABOUT SCHEDULING: Professional irrigation scheduling is a ticketed certification, and our irrigation technicians are certified by the Irrigation Industry Association of BC.

Our service is built upon a series of observations, data collection, and calculations to measure how your irrigation system is delivering water to your landscape. Key metrics include measuring uniformity, volume, and rate of watering.

Successful irrigation scheduling requires an intersect between technical irrigation knowledge and in-depth plant knowledge; North Arrow Landscapes is uniquely positioned to have both skill sets at the expert level.
