Working With Water

Our water features abound with keen attention to detail and pure, wild inspiration, evoking the natural world in ways that plants alone cannot.

Why should I consider a water feature?

Water features are beautifully raw and elemental. Consisting primarily of stone and water, they add a new level to the sensory experience of a garden.

The addition of aquatic and marginal plantings can tie a water feature to the surrounding landscape and truly bring them to life.

What types of water features can I commission?

North Arrow Landscapes designs and builds water features of all sizes, including:

  • Tiny patio gurglers
  • Simple streams and waterfalls bordering a small patio
  • Large scale wildlife ponds
  • Even natural swimming pools!

SUITS ANY STYLE: Within certain bounds, any space can suit a water feature. Perhaps a cast concrete water curtain is just the dynamic touch your modern or contemporary landscape was missing!

Why choose North Arrow for my water feature?

We combine thoughtful material choices with creative layouts and dynamic, natural waterfalls, streams, and pools in a way that makes our work recognizable and unique in our area.

Many years of travel and exploration has equipped our team with the necessary vision to build gorgeous water features. This life experience gives us an intuitive understanding of how to build water features that look established and behave naturally.

The Benefits of Building with Biofilters

Rather than relying solely on mechanical hardware, we prefer to keep waters clear by building a beautiful, fully functioning aquatic habitat known as a biofilter.

Natural approach

In a biofilter (or bog filter), layers of gravel, carefully chosen aquatic plants, and naturally occurring micro-organisms do all of the filtration work for you.

Easy upkeep

Biofilters and lush aquatic planting combine to create a living ecosystem that out-competes algae. This keeps your water clear while lowering maintenance requirements.

Less hardware

Taking the biofilter approach means we can often avoid using the hardware and equipment found in conventional water features, while also improving performance.

Water Feature Maintenance

Thoughtful design is an essential component of any low maintenance water feature, and it all starts at the planning phase.

How often do I need to maintain my water feature?

You want to spend your time enjoying a water feature, not maintaining it. That's why water features built by North Arrow Landscapes are easy to maintain, with most of the upkeep taking place on an annual basis.

Do I need to use any products to maintain clear water?

The biofilter in your water feature works hard to keep water clear, however as a living ecosystem it does take some time to mature. In the meantime, we will recommend and supply ecologically-friendly treatment products to filter out the nutrients that otherwise feed the organisms in any biofilm. This will keep your water clear while also maintaining a safe drinking and bathing area for the birds and the bees in your neighbourhood.

NO BIOFILTER? For smaller water features like gurglers that won’t support a biofilter, we will provide the right product to keep both the water and the system clean.

What other maintenance does a water feature require?

Beyond water clarity, typical maintenance activities include:

  • Cutting back and occasionally dividing vegetation
  • Cleaning out the biofilter outlets
  • Keeping streams and water falls clear of debris such as fallen leaves or branches

Do you provide water feature maintenance services?

Yes, but only for water features installed by North Arrow Landscapes. However, as our systems are designed from the ground up for easy maintenance, we can educate you on how to maintain your water feature yourself, should you be so inclined.
