Our Story

North Arrow in a Nutshell

North Arrow is a full-service landscape company built upon a team of horticulture, irrigation, and construction professionals.

Who is North Arrow Landscapes?

We're a passionate bunch who have dedicated ourselves to the pursuit of excellence in this industry. Members of our team have spent years in the classroom and the field as students, instructors, and installers.

As a collective with a common vision, North Arrow designs, builds, and maintains beautiful landscapes that thrive in the spectacular geography and majesty of central Vancouver Island.

We specialize in naturalistic landscape design, and share a love of garden design, building water features, developing irrigation systems, hardscaping with natural stone, and providing quality landscape maintenance services. (Check out our services page for the full list.)

AKA NICOL LANDSCAPES: North Arrow Landscapes has been in operation in some form or another since 2013. In late 2021 we rebranded from Nicol Landscapes in order to better reflect the vision and future of our company.

Comprehensive plant knowledge and a dedication to horticultural education is a pillar of our company culture that we work tirelessly to uphold.

Artistry

We seek to bring joy to the lives of those around us through the beautiful, dynamic, and unique landscapes that we design and install.

Craftsmanship

We have incredibly high standards of work and an uncompromising commitment to the success of the landscapes we create and maintain.

Service

We strive to stand out in a crowded industry by always putting our clients first and being respectful of their schedules, landscapes, and goals.

The North Arrow Symbol

The north arrow represents our commitment to realigning landscapes from a functional and ecological perspective.

Why did you choose a north arrow?

A north arrow is a symbol on a map that is used to align the image relative to true north. As a symbol that provides clear direction, we feel the north arrow is a perfect metaphor for our company.

Our urban landscapes are part of a larger ecosystem, and need to function as quality habitat for people, pollinators, and other insects alike.

So when we're on site, we work with the entire landscape in order to realign the function and aesthetic of the space in order to best achieve our goals.

SCOTT SAYS: "I love that I am able to put my own creative touch on a landscape, never forgetting what's already there, what used to be there, or arguably what should be there."

How do your designs embody the north arrow concept?

Through abundant education and field experience we have learned to observe the way people interact with and move through a landscape. By creating beautiful, flowing, easily-maintained landscapes, we can improve the way people spend time outdoors.

This is why we think of our designs as realigning a landscape, much in the way that a north arrow aligns a map. By thinking about how we interact with the land, we can integrate the built environment with nature in the most mutually-beneficial way achievable.

To us, this is a representation of the only way forward for our industry, our communities, and indeed our planet.
